Biography & Research

Qiang Ji received his Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Recently, he served as a program director at the National Science Foundation, managing NSF’s machine learning and computer vision programs. He also held research and visiting positions with the Beckman Institute at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, and the US Air Force Research Laboratory.

Dr. Ji main area of expertise is in computer vision, pattern recognition, and their applications. He has published over 160 articles in these areas. He has extensive experience in developing computer vision algorithms for facial processing, analysis, and recognition, and for human body tracking, gesture recognition, and human action recognition. His group has applied their computer vision techniques to a wide range of applications including affective computing, human computer interaction, transportation, security and surveillance, and medical imaging.

Dr. Ji is an editor on several IEEE and international journals related to computer vision, pattern recognition. He has served as a general chair, program chair, technical area chair, and program committee member in numerous international conferences/workshops. Dr. Ji is a fellow of International Association on Pattern Recognition.
