Biography & Research

Torben is a Ph.D. Student at the Center for Cognition, Communication & Culture and the Graduate Program in Architectural Acoustics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, studying under Jonas Braasch. He received his bachelor’s degree in Political Philosophy and Studio Art from Bowdoin College and master’s degree in Architectural Sciences from RPI. Torben’s research interests focus on binaural localization, especially the varied manifestations of the precedence effect. Torben also studies deep listening under Pauline Oliveros and performs using using her Expanded Instrument System.

Torben had previous careers in music, import/export, and furniture design/construction. Torben also plays squash, tennis, and hikes.
